Rita, The weekend rat by Sonia Levitin Illustrated by Leonard Shortall
Rita was a weekend rat because Cynthia brought her home from school each weekend for safekeeping until Monday morning. But Cynthia really wanted Rita for more than a weekend, and when the chance came to have Rita for all time, she jumped at it.
First, however, she had to prove that she could really care for Rita, as she had not always done when Rita was simply a boarder.
Cynthia was determined. But her many other ventures often got in her way. The boys' club, for example, took a lot of her time. She was president and maintained her position by being the most inventive member and by stubbornly denying any girlish activities. And there was her brother, who could be annoying and time consuming. And then there was the great paper drive that started as a small idea and somehow wound up as a huge headache--a garage full of paper.
A rat may not be everyone's dream of a pet. But Cynthia's feelings about Rita will be shared by many.
A great book for readers young and old as well as rat lovers.
